Dietrich was born in Fuessen, Germany. He received a thorough education in metals as journeyman mechanic and mechanical engineer; he emigrated to the US in 1968. After his engineering career Dietrich moved to Clayton, GA and took several smithing classes at the John C. Campbell Folkschool, Brasstown, NC; he founded Big Bang Forge Inc. in 2004.

His work has been exhibited at the Madison Morgan Cultural Center, Madison, GA and at the National Ornamental Metal Museum in Memphis, TN. It is also featured in two books: “Ironwork: Dynamic Details”, and “Ironwork Today 2” (Schiffer Publ.).
