Roger was born in Kansas, grew up in Northern Virginia, attended University of Maryland and Manhattan School of Music in New York City.

At a young age, he discover some creative genes and began whittling, woodworking, painting, playing the tuba, and singing in a quartet. He later studied opera and sang professionally in New York City. After four years he chose to give up opera singing and "began working for a living," as he puts it. After retiring in 1999, he moved to Toccoa where his daughter, Catrina, and son-in-law, Nathan Brock, had begun their family.

Roger is partial to working with porcelain clay, due to the smoothness and the birhgtness of the finished glazes.
